The difference between Nautical Charts and Topographical Maps
CHARTS include detailed information about the coastline which takes into account varying tidal levels. Charts are working documents used by mariners to maneuver their vessel taking into consideration depth and various obstructions. In most cases, a chart plots ocean waters.MAPS emphasize land forms. Shorelines are represented and roads are marked although no indication of condition or obstructions are depicted. Inland bodies of water are represented on a map as well as the relief of the landscape. Towns are noted and in some cases, buildings are notated. If you have a question about a special point of interest, please contact us.
How our jewelry is made
Every piece we make is a custom piece meaning no two pieces are exactly alike! Every part of the process takes human hands…but we have streamlined our process so that your custom piece takes about 3 weeks to ship.We cast in two kinds of metal: bronze and sterling silver. Bronze is a nice option for sailors since it is a metal that patinas favorably in a saltwater environment. Once we capture your point of interest from the chart, we then print it on special paper. We crop the image and embed it in the bottom of the jewelry piece. Resin is poured over the piece which takes 24 hours to cure and dries to a brilliant shine. Your piece is polished and packaged for shipment.
Since our jewelry is designed to be circular, there is a slight dome effect that magnifies the chart image inside the jewelry. The resin looks like glass but it is much more lightweight and resistant.
Your point of interest
Capturing your special point of interest can take a little bit of time…remember, we are creating this piece especially for you! We want to make sure that we get it right so that you’ll have a piece you can enjoy for a long time. When you complete the custom order form online, you will give us an address if possible or describe specifically the area of interest. We will then take that image and reduce it as necessary, place a circle on the area to be cut and provide you with a proof of this image in a PDF file. You will make corrections and/or clarify the location and receive another proof. When you are happy with the proof we send you, you will approve the proof. From the time when you approve the proof, it takes approximately 5-10 business days to ship your item.
We can select an image from the East and West coast of North America, Hawaii, Alaska, parts of the Caribbean, the Great Lakes, navigational waterways and some larger lakes such as Lake Tahoe. When you are selecting an area of interest, keep in mind that although we use updated charts, the point of interest you want may not be notated on the chart. Many times there is a favorite beach known to all but is simply not marked on the chart. That is because the chart is made for water navigation. Whenever possible, we try to accommodate your request by considering other sources besides nautical charts.
If there is a particular image that you would like, you may mail your image to us and we will duplicate it, design it in a piece of our jewelry and return the original to you. Please contact us for more details.
